Microsoft has launched a Cloud Economics tool to estimate the costs of using Microsoft products for running a managed datacenter versus VMWare. No surprises for guessing which option turns out to be the cheapest.

I’m not a fan of the phrase Private Cloud as it confuses the definition of cloud computing. What it is really referring to is the ability to run a more dynamic datacenter, provisioning servers and scaling resources on demand. Cloud computing is about buying a subscription to somebody elses’ datacenter, where you pay by the user or resource usage but have no say in the maintenance or upgrade of the datacenter.
